The Mechanic and the Architect will be a trilogy; I have written the main storyline, and designed the universe in which it takes place. Thematic points will include power dynamics, escapism and the line between science and mysticism. If you’re looking for cool, futuristic technology, it’s got plenty of that. Space exploration? Check. Quirky, three-dimensional characters? Yup. Romance? Both sweet and taboo.
The story is full of clever threads that are woven into a beautiful universe of madness. The first book, titled The Council of Light, is complete at 130,000 words.
Book One: The Council of Light
Ben the mechanic has seen more than enough of the Inner Temporal Zone for his two lifetimes. He’s watched his experimental utopian homeworld explode. He has seen the faces of the shadowy Council of Light, and knows them to be mortal. He has destroyed a Solar Harnessing Core, the holy technology that powers the entire realm, with his own hands.
Ben was content to drink away the rest of his years with the only two people he hasn’t lost, a warrior woman and a wizardly alien, until a young cook joins their crew and reignites his flair for the dramatic.
Though their age gap would preclude any romantic relationship, the cook is drawn to Ben’s tortured eccentricity, and he indulges her by recounting his life’s unbelievable adventures, more and more relieving himself of the weight of the dark secrets he’s uncovered over the years. At the same time, Ben uncovers the hero he once was, a master manipulator of both minds, and the sciences of the era, which have largely surpassed human understanding.
Violence and crime are returning to the long-dormant ITZ, as anomalous individuals wake from the dream of the Council of Light. But lurking in The Voids is a predator, whose psychic roots seek to take the spark of individuality from those who still possess it.
